More information

Due to at least two identified problems in Internet Explorer 8, Content Studio version 5 is not entirely compatible with the release version of the Web browser. These two problems affects only clients running on Windows Vista / Server 2008 with User Account Control (UAC) turned on. We have not found any problems for clients running Internet Explorer 8 on earlier Windows based operating systems.

Problems with the alert function in JavaScript

This problem only occurs protected mode is deactivated. Modal dialog boxes (JavaScript’s alert() / confirm() functions) in modal and modeless windows, are no longer shown when any modal or modeless window has been opened more than four times during a browser session. After this you must restart Internet Explorer to get this functionality back. This can be very annoying since any error or information message will simply not be displayed.

Problems with right-click menus

When protected mode is on, right-click menus are not displayed when activated in modeless or modal windows. This will prevent users from using any of the right-click menu commands available in modeless or modal popup windows like the Document Hierarchy dialog.

Resolution

The alert function problem will be fixed in Content Studio 5.2 SP1. In this distribution all calls to the alert and confirm methods now are redirected to the VBScript MsgBox function which is not affected by this problem.

These problems only occur of the User Account Control functionality is activated, so deactivating it is a work around. However, Microsoft strongly recommends that User Account Control should be activated as one of the most powerful security features in the operating system.

Status

These problems only affect Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista / Server 2008 when UAC (User Account Control) is activated. Internet Explorer 8 running on earlier operating systems is not affected by these problems.

We have submitted these problems as bugs in Internet Explorer 8 to Microsoft and are waiting on possible resolutions.
